Each August, we celebrate new beginnings. Thousands of new and previously enrolled children are now returning to classrooms as our centers reopen for the new program year. It will be a thrill to witness them try new experiences, explore the world around them, and grow socially, emotionally, and cognitively throughout the year ahead.

August is also the time to celebrate all those children who were in our program last year and are now embarking on their K–12 educational journey. As we celebrate their successful transitions, it is important to remember that building the bridge to kindergarten is not a one-time activity, but an ongoing process. Our Transitions Framework and the CA Dept. of Education’s Great Start Toolkit (free account required) are available to help parents, teachers, and administrators prepare this year’s students for a smooth path to elementary school. It’s never too soon to start!

In 2023, August brings even more exciting new beginnings. LACOE is pleased to host the newly appointed director of the Office of Head Start, Mr. Khari Garvin, as he visits LA County to screen the documentary film Black Boys. And we’re especially thrilled this month to recognize all of our new teacher assistants—Head Start parents who have successfully completed our Universal Pre-Kindergarten Career Development Initiative and are commencing their new career in early education. Congratulations to each of you!

As we launch this final year of our five-year project period, we’ll be focusing on closing out this project period and planning for the five years ahead. Here’s to the start of a wonderful year for the whole Head Start and Early Learning family!
