It’s a celebration of success for children and families! Head Start has grown from an 8-week demonstration project in 1965 to include full-day, full-year services. In 58 years, Head Start has served more than 36 million children and families across California and the nation!
Research shows that young children who receive high-quality learning opportunities are more likely to succeed in school and in life. California’s Universal Prekindergarten (UPK) program intends to provide this foundation for all four-year-old children by 2025-26. UPK includes the following: Head Start, California State Preschool, transitional kindergarten, subsidized programs operated by community-based organizations with a preschool learning experience, other prekindergarten programs serving three- and four-year-old children, family childcare, private preschool, and Expanded Learning Opportunities programs (ELO-P).
